before and after.

thanks so much for all of the supportive comments yesterday.  they are truly appreciated.

okay.  as promised: Goodwill Makeover Project, take one.

one day last fall, strictly on a whim, I decided to hit up the local Goodwill.  we had recently cut our spending budget, and so I figured this would be the place to go for stuff on the cheap.  not to mention a way to get my shopping fix in.  I mean a girl's gotta look out for her needs, right?

so, I maneuver my great white shark into a parking spot and make my way into the store.  immediately I'm overpowered by the "used" smell, but since I'm not newly pregnant, it's tolerable.  I head over to where the furniture section appears to be located.  it consists of one lone aisle.  as I wander down said aisle, this piece was the first thing I laid eyes on, and immediately I was all dude, CAN I MARRY YOU?  it was love at first sight.  but what to do with it? (hmm, reminds me of my husband. after he finally agreed to attach the handcuffs, er tie the knot, I was kinda like, "well, that was fun. but now what do I do with the guy? stuff him in the closet for safe-keeping?")

as I looped around the rest of the store, I contemplated my options.  coffee table?  night stand?  end table?  the possibilities seemed endless.  I was sold.  so I forked over the $10 and right then and there, I became an official Goodwill fan.

that evening, I put the kids to work removing the drawer pulls and sanding it down.  and then, I couldn't decide what color to paint it.  and then, winter arrived.  and so it sat in the garage until just last Saturday.

before (Scarlett was just a peanut. still is.):

during (oops, busted. on certain occasions, like for projects and stuff, I let Gary out of the closet.):

after (the drawer pulls are actually silver. I, um, Gary first sprayed primer on them (above) before applying the final coat. don't you love his ingenuity?):

the vases and picture I already had.  I haven't had a chance to go shopping, but I figured in the meantime, these will do.  I recently scored the pillows off the clearance rack at Pier 1.  the drawers are currently housing my gazillion and one catalogues that arrive in the mail on a daily basis. (sorry for the not so great pictures-- this house has really crummy lighting. and trust me, if I owned this place, the walls would NOT be tan.)

wah-la!  there you have it.  after all was said and done, my total out of pocket expense was $20.  not bad, eh?

happy weekend!

Oh I love that! I wish I had an eye for that kind of stuff... very hard for me to see the potential in a project like that but I love the results. And for that kind of money... hmm, I really hate my current end tables...

Oh my, that is gorgeous. Too bad it doesn't really fit in with your living space. Guess you'll have to haul it down to Phx and let me take it off your hands.

Very nice! Is that one of those old library catalog/book finder carts?? Back in the day when you had to search for books through all those little cards. I love repainting stuff, it makes it look completely different. I am with Kim, she said she may not want it after all, so since you are hauling it to phoenix, I may as well take it ;) lol.

Turned out very nice. I thought it was bigger for some reason - more like a side table size. It works perfect in that spot. Like the vases too. You're lucky to have Gary - I don't think I would have had the patience to take it all apart and put it back together again !!
